There are several different techniques that can be used to create painted silk scarves. These techniques involve using salt resist, batik methods and water based resists. You can see examples of all three by Clicking Here.

Salt resist scarves are dyed and then stretched out on a frame. A type of rock salt is sprinkled on top of the scarf before the dye is dry and let to sit there until the dye does dry. The rock salt is later just shaken off the scarf and the scarf must go through a steaming process for several hours to set the dye. The rock salt actually absorbs some of the dye underneath each piece of salt, and this gives an intriguing design to the scarf. Of course painted silk scarves made with this technique are unique because it would not be possible to sprinkle the rock salt over the dyed scarf in exactly the same way each time. There is no one particular color that is best when it comes to using this technique. Since one of the properties of silk is that it takes to dyes very well, the different color combinations that can be used are only limited by one’s imagination. The model in the picture on this page is wearing a scarf done using the salt resist technique. Once again, you can click here to check out over a dozen color combinations using the salt resist technique: Scarves by Linda.

Batik is a method of painting on silk that involves using hot melted wax applied onto silk. When melted wax is applied after using a particular color of dye, that wax then repels any other colors from penetrating the wax and getting onto the silk surface. This means that additional colored dyes that are painted onto the silk can add color to all other parts of the silk except those sections with wax on them. Usually silk artists work from light to dark colors by painting a particular color of dye on the fabric and then covering that area with wax, and after that they move to darker colors. After all the painting has been completed the fabric must go through a process to remove the wax. Once again you can see several examples of this technique if you CLICK HERE.

Water based resists are another way to paint on silk. Since dyes that are painted on silk fabric tend to run, the resist is applied as an outline of the shape or drawing that is to be painted onto the piece of silk material. Some of these resists require drying for 24 hours, and then the sections of the piece can be painted with appropriate colors of dye. Once again you can see examples of this by clicking on Scarves by Linda.

Luxurious looking and unique hand painted scarves can be obtained at surprisingly good prices. Carrying several when travelling allows a lady to have several different fashion looks even if she wears the same outfit.
